Attorney Referrals
Have a client matter that may benefit from additional legal experience, specialized representation, or assistance outside your firm's practice areas? Carr Law welcomes inquiries from attorneys regarding potential referrals and collaborative representation.
A Professional Resource for Fellow Attorneys
Attorneys occasionally encounter matters that fall outside their primary practice areas, involve issues requiring additional experience, present potential conflicts, or would benefit from another attorney's involvement. In those circumstances, a professional referral or co-counsel relationship may provide an appropriate solution for the client.
Carr Law is available to communicate directly with referring attorneys regarding potential matters and to determine whether the firm may be able to assist.
Every potential matter is reviewed individually. Acceptance of a referral is subject to conflicts review, professional considerations, the nature and circumstances of the matter, the firm's availability, and any other requirements applicable to the representation.
When an Attorney Referral May Be Appropriate
You may wish to contact Carr Law when:
- A matter falls outside your firm's primary practice areas.
- A client may benefit from additional or specialized legal experience.
- You are unable to take a matter because of your firm's workload or availability.
- A matter involves litigation or other proceedings requiring additional counsel.
- You are considering bringing in co-counsel for a particular matter.
- A potential conflict or other professional consideration prevents your firm from handling the matter.
- A client has a legal issue that may be better addressed by another attorney or firm.
- You would like to discuss whether Carr Law may be an appropriate resource for a particular matter.
How the Attorney Referral Process Works
Initial Contact
Contact Carr Law by email at
Preliminary Review
Carr Law will consider the general nature of the matter, applicable practice area, jurisdiction, timing, and other information necessary for an initial assessment.
Conflicts Review
Before accepting representation or proceeding with a referral, appropriate conflicts and professional-responsibility considerations must be evaluated.
Discuss Next Steps
If the matter appears appropriate for Carr Law, the attorneys can discuss the appropriate structure for moving forward.
Referral or Co-Counsel Arrangements
Depending upon the circumstances of a particular matter, an attorney referral may involve Carr Law assuming responsibility for the matter, working with the referring attorney as co-counsel, or another structure appropriate to the circumstances.
Any arrangement involving multiple attorneys, the scope of representation, responsibilities of counsel, fees, or division of fees will be addressed separately and documented as appropriate before the attorneys proceed.
Any fee arrangement or division of fees must comply with applicable professional-conduct requirements, including requirements concerning client consent, responsibility for the representation, and the reasonableness of fees.
Information to Include in an Initial Referral
To help Carr Law determine whether a matter may be appropriate for further discussion, attorneys may provide the following information:
- Referring attorney's name and law firm.
- Best contact information.
- General practice area or type of matter.
- General jurisdiction and location of the matter.
- Whether litigation or another proceeding has already been initiated.
- Important upcoming deadlines or scheduled proceedings.
- Whether the referring attorney expects to remain involved.
- A brief, non-confidential summary sufficient for an initial evaluation.
Please do not send extensive confidential, privileged, or sensitive information by initial email unless specifically requested. Additional information can be exchanged through an appropriate process after preliminary discussions and any necessary conflicts considerations.
Professional and Ethical Considerations
A referral inquiry does not automatically establish an attorney-client relationship between Carr Law and the referred client. Carr Law must first determine whether it can undertake the matter and whether doing so is appropriate under applicable professional-responsibility rules.
Information provided during an initial inquiry may be subject to professional confidentiality obligations even when a representation is not ultimately established. For that reason, referring attorneys should initially provide only the information reasonably necessary to permit a preliminary evaluation.
Nothing on this page constitutes a commitment by Carr Law to accept a matter, enter into a co-counsel relationship, or enter into any particular fee arrangement.
Discuss a Potential Attorney Referral
Attorneys interested in discussing a potential referral or co-counsel matter are invited to contact Carr Law directly.
Important Notice: This page is intended for communication between attorneys and Carr Law concerning potential referrals or professional collaboration. Submission of information does not guarantee that Carr Law will accept a matter or establish an attorney-client relationship. A referral inquiry is subject to conflicts review, professional-responsibility requirements, availability, and other considerations applicable to the particular matter.
No statement on this page is intended to create a guarantee regarding the outcome of any legal matter or to establish any particular fee, referral, co-counsel, or other contractual arrangement. Any such arrangement, if appropriate, will be addressed separately between the attorneys and, where required, with the client.
Attorneys should avoid transmitting unnecessary confidential or privileged information through an initial referral inquiry.
